We are always attracted to records like the best, largest, smallest, tiniest, and the likes. In fact, we are also looking to break every possible record and hope to set our own. But these largest gatherings are great because of the fact that they are not easy for anyone or any group to surpass.

The Indian city of Allahabad holds the largest gathering ever. On February 10, 2013, about 30 million people gathered at the outskirts of the city during the Kumbh Mela festival. It is a celebration held every 12 years at the conjunction of the two sacred rivers in India. Participants bathe in the holy river to wash their sins in this two-month celebration. The entire 2013 celebration gathered about 120 million devotees and tourists.

The 2016 World Series victory of Chicago Cubs brought about 5 million people attending the celebration parade. That number nearly doubles the 2.7 million inhabitants of the city. The parade covered a seven-mile route in the downtown area to Grant Park where a rally was held. Chicago Cubs won their first ever World Series Championship in 108 years.

A great number of public sector workers in India went on strike in September 2016. About 180 million were reported to have joined the strike. The Indians protest Prime Minister Narenda Modi’s decision to push for the privatization and other right-wing economic policies. State bank employees, school teachers, postal workers, miners, and construction workers participated the rally. However, the number is still not yet verified.

The American war with the Iraqi forces received a protest from about 10million people in various cities in the world. These coordinated protests were staged on February 15-16 in 2003. Rome had 3million people in protest, 1.5million in Madrid, 1million in London, 400,000 in New York and in over 200 cities of the United States.

The Guinness Book of World Records recognized the 1994 New Year’s Eve free concert as the largest concert in attendance. The concert was staged on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. But who had the concert on that night? It was Rod Stewart.

An online protest in 2012 was participated by 115,000 websites and over 13 million internet users. The online protest received 10 million petition signatures, 3 million emails sent, 3 million messages on Twitter, and 100,000 phone calls against the bill aimed to stop Internet piracy. The two bills protested were the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House and the Protect IP Act (PIPA) in the Senate.

On February 6, 1952, more than 20 million people participated and witnessed the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The 25-year old successor of King George VI was the mother of two young children below four years of age. The preparation required the Westminster Abbey to close for five months in order to process construction for 8,000 people inside. Outside the Abbey were 3million people and some 20.4million viewers watching on TV during the coronation.

In 1984, the Guinness Book of World Records declared the funeral of C.N. Annadurai as the largest funeral procession recorded. He is the first Non-Congress Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in independent India. About 15 million people attended Annadurai’s funeral in 1969.
